British Columbia is a beautifully diverse province when it comes to ecosystems and the various types of nature we have. I’ve always been a nature lover and love visiting different parts of beautiful B.C to see what there is around us.
I have heard the term invasive species before but never took the time to learn what that means, or what it impacts.
So lets break it down, Invasive Species:
- Are any non-native organism that cause economic or environmental harm (as described by the ISC)
- Have the potential to pose undesirable or detrimental impacts on people, animals, or whole ecosystems
- Don’t have any natural predators or pathogens to help keep their population under control
Now this seems pretty significant so one might not think there are many invasive species here in our home but we hav around 175 harm causing plants in BC.
So I would like to find out more about what kinds of impacts these species have on BC in terms of economic, environmental and, societal. Also I would like to learn about a good handful of these species; where they came from, in their homeland what is their natural predator, when were they brought over, and other interesting things like: are we trying to remove them, has our society accepted the new plant?
